What is Operation Backpack?
Operation Backpack is a program started at the Elsberry R-II School District by Mrs. B and Mr. Miller in 2011. This program helps provide food for students in the district who may need a little extra help on the weekends. Each bag supplies a child in the program with enough food for 2 breakfasts, 4 meal options, 4 snacks for the weekend. We currently feed approximately 100 students each weekend (kindergarten through high school).
Where does the food come from?
Food for the program is gathered from your donations of food and finance. In order to feed all of our students in need, it is also necessary to supplement those donations with a purchase from local grocery stores.
How much does each Buddy Bag cost?
Each bag costs approximately $5.00 per child, per week.
What can I donate?
You can donate non-perishable food or money to support the program.
Where do I take my donations?
Monetary or food donations can be mailed or dropped off at our Central Office. Located on the backside of our school down from the Elementary Office entrance. Please make the checks payable to Elsberry R-II School District, with Operation Backpack in the memo. In addition, we have a new drop off point at Peoples Bank & Trust of Elsberry.
How are Operation Backpack bags prepared?
Our National Honor Society assembles the individual bags and delivers them to classrooms on Thursdays. Our Junior Honor Society takes inventory and helps maintain the bags.
