At the start of second semester, the Literacy Cadet program gained five new students. Bethany Cunningham, Brittany Kube, Maggie Norton, Heather Unger, and Felicia York joined the ranks at the start of the new term. The students meet in the Elsberry High School library each day during their assigned hours and complete tasks required of them, receiving English credit as a result. One of the opportunities made available to students enrolled in the program is working with younger students. Eighth graders enrolled in Claire Hasemeier’s literature classes at Elsberry Middle School have been working with extreme effort since November on a research project designed to incorporate reading, writing, and technology skills. Information that the students have been researching will become presentations for History Day, a national event sponsored by the University of Maryland. Local students compete nationally in order to go on to the state level for further competition. State winners are then qualified to attend . . . read more
