Science Class Goes to Columbia
November 21, 2006
Field trips are a very educating experience even at the high school level. Recently Kenna Heitman’s high school Chemistry and Physics classes traveled to the campus of the University of Missouri, Columbia for a Science conference.
Students began the day by listening to Dr. Edward Addlestein, Assistant Coroner of Boone County, who explained the purpose of and methodology of autopsies as well as forensic analysis of accident and crime scenes.
Following the lecture, students were given an introduction to MU. Students were informed of the many degree programs offered at MU and how to explore various interests before declaring a major course of study. A brief overview of the Honors College and application requirements were given as well as general information about grants, scholarships and application deadlines. Then students were treated to an all you could eat lunch at Plaza 900 Dining Hall.
The day ended at the UM Research Reactor, were students were given small group tours by staff members who explained the services provided through research and development in nuclear engineering at MU. This research facility has already succeeded in the development of treatments for cancer and other diseases through the use of radiopharmaceuticals, many of which are produced only at this facility.
Students attending the days events were Dusti Eaton, Lauren Lehmkuhl, Kayla Murphy, Chris Dameron, Suzan Gnade, Tyler Herring, Jasmine Tillotson, Jimmy Pruitt, Elise Miller, TJ Sherrow, Brad Slaughter, Lindsey Raney, Todd Boedeker, Caleb McLeod, Nicholas Grimes, Mike Spies, Amanda Suddarth, Morgan Brown and Cara Thurstin. Other chaperons for the trip were Errol Spratt and Marcy Pestka.
