High School: WAR WHOOP: Teacher Talk

Teacher Talk 29

by Kim Jones

March 11, 2010

Elsberry's sixth grade students are just as excited as everyone else at school as we enter the last nine weeks of the school year.

As I have mentioned in the past teachers and staff at Elsberry Schools try to teach character traits that will last a lifetime for students who come through the doors at our school.  The past couple of week's Mrs. Huber's class took the monthly character trait “RESPECT” and came up with an idea about what it meant to them.  Then they performed it at the monthly assembly.  The class decided to go off the song RESPECT by Aretha Franklin.  Their presentation was seven skits and each skit was acted out from each letter of the word respect.  R was Respect for others property; E was Everyone deserves to be treated the same no matter how different they are; S was Sharing is caring;  P was Positive attitudes make happy people;  E was Encouraging others to be themselves; C was Caring about others feelings; and  T was Treating others the way you want to be treated.  Their presentation was in the form of a news broadcast and showed how students treat each other with respect in Elsberry.  It was finished up with the singing of “RESPECT find out what it means to me”, guest staring Elsberry's own Aretha Franklin.  Mrs. Huber also video taped the production to use for future use.

Mrs. Rockwell's class has also been busy as they dive into the true meaning of “autobiography”.  Even though students read about other people and their life in different books, she has the class put together their own autobiography.  The students are required to collect photos of their lives from birth to the present and then write about each photo, creating their own autobiography.  This also gives the students the opportunity to learn more about those around them everyday.

The third sixth grade class taught by Shanna Lonsberry also stays busy with daily lessons.  The group just finished “Fractured Fairy Tales” with various activities to go along with the book.
