D.A.R.E program at Elsberry

Sixty-eight students at Elsberry Middle School successfully completed the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, capping off their course requirements with a graduation ceremony on Tuesday, March 9 in the high school gymnasium. The fifth grade students were taught the program by Deputy Amy Tippit from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department.
The graduation ceremony began with the “Posting of the Colors” by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard. Abby Hall, high school senior, followed by signing the National Anthem. After friends, family and sheriff department officials were welcomed by Middle School Principals, Kenny Youmans and Cyril Heintzelman, Deputy Tippit entertained with a slide show of the students participating in the program over the last several weeks. She then announced the winners of the essay contest and the outstanding D.A.R.E student, one being from each of the three classes. The essay winners were Hallie VomBey, Alison McCombs and Mysteaka Hutchinson. Outstanding students were Jonathan Almus, Madison Halter and Mandy Horne.

D.A.R.E. is an international education program that seeks to prevent use of illegal drugs, membership in gangs, and violent behavior. It was founded in 1985 and is a demand-side drug control strategy of the U.S. War on drugs.
