History Day comes to EMS on Feb. 11

Eighth graders enrolled in Claire Hasemeier’s literature classes at Elsberry Middle School have been working with extreme effort since November on a research project designed to incorporate reading, writing, and technology skills.  Information that the students have been researching will become presentations for History Day, a national event sponsored by the University of Maryland.  Local students compete nationally in order to go on to the state level for further competition.  State winners are then qualified to attend the National History Day contest at the University of Maryland in June.

On Thursday evening, February 11, in the EHS library, students will present their projects to the community and parents for viewing, and to the contest judges for evaluation.

The six highest ranking student projects will appear at the University of Missouri – St. Louis later in February as competition in regional finals.

Elsberry High School BRAVES coordinator, Jason Miller, has supported many of the students during the process.  When asked about the beneficial aspects of the work being done, he stated, “It gives students the chance to research a topic that interests them and allows them to learn technology skills, which can be applied later in life.”
