Community Support Adds New Books

by Mindy Rhoades

January 26, 2010

During the first semester of the school year, two programs supported by the community added new books to both the elementary and secondary libraries.  Both libraries hosted Scholastic Book Fairs and Gumdrop Book Company’s Revved-for-Reading read-a-thon.

The secondary library opened the Holiday Scholastic Book Fair for one week during the Christmas shopping season and was pleased to invite Santa for a visit with young students on the evening of the elementary Christmas concert.  Parents and their children were invited to shop after visiting with Santa Claus.

As a result of parent and student financial support of the Holiday Fair, the secondary library collection grew with $1200 worth of new books added to the shelves.

The readathon, held earlier in October, brought results to both grade-level libraries.  Students throughout grades 1 through 8 earned pledges for minutes read and chose books for their own personal libraries.  An added benefit was that $300 worth of books were donated by the Gumdrop Book Company to both libraries’ collections.

Cheri Rountree, elementary librarian, and Karin Busiere, secondary librarian, appreciate the community’s continued appreciation of the importance of reading, and are grateful for the assistance in building each library’s selections.
