Paving in Progress

With a grant received this spring, paving of a parking lot on
the Elsberry R-II campus has begun. Mid River Asphalt has been
contracted to do the work. Part of the grant qualifications was to
use recycled glass, so as always the students, parents and staff at
the school kicked in to help. A contest was held between grades
Kindergarten through fourth, to see which grade could bring in the
most glass items to recycle, with the winner receiving a pizza
party. The competition was so overwhelming that two grades received
the prize. The kindergarten classes brought in the most with a
total of 2380 items, but the first grade classes were so close and
over 2000 items also, so they also received a pizza party.
A total of 7287 items were brought in for the recycling bin, which
had to be emptied several times!!
Fourth grade teachers and students were in charge of the collection
and counting of items. Mr. Flanagan, superintendent of schools,
stated, “I was overwhelmed by the success of this campaign, and
elated that the project is now underway.”
