On Friday October 31, Spanish II classes at Elsberry High School celebrated Dia de los Muertos. Dia de los Muertos means Day of the Dead and has been celebrated by people from Spanish speaking countries for over 3500 years. Dia de los Muertos is traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2. November 1 is All Saints Day where they celebrate the death of children. November 2 is Dia de los Muertos where they celebrate the death of adults. The classes brought in many traditional foods and drinks and even decorated an ofrenda, or alter, for their loved ones. Eutiguia Santos de Garcia, originally from Oaxaca Mexico, taught the students how to make home-made tamales. Her daughter, Rosalia Garcia, and her niece, Concepcion Barragan assisted her. Dia de los Muertos is an amazing holiday because the people celebrate the death of their loved ones instead of mourning them.
