Kindergarten

Phonics has been a challenge at times, but we have learned “Ll”, “Oo”, “Gg”, “Hh”, “Tt”, “Pp”, “Aa”, “Nn”, “Mm”, and “Ii”.  Our upcoming letters are “Ss”, “Ff”, “Rr”, and “Kk”.  Handwriting is coming along with practice.  Chapter 4 is our new chapter in Math.  It covers counting and writing numbers 6-9, adding two numbers equaling up to 12, ordering numbers 0-12, and finding patterns within numbers.  We are eager to learn about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving.  We love working in our journals and reading and writing the room.

First Grade

Fall is upon us and the first graders have worked really hard first quarter.  We continue to increase our vocabulary and sight words.  They are doing well keeping up with the phonics lessons and mastering the spelling lists.  In math, students are still practicing their addition with sums up to 10 and also learning to subtract.  Memorizing the math facts is a key math concept that really needs to be practiced daily.  Animals are still the topic for science and in social studies the students are still learning the states and map skills.  Also this month, First graders will also be celebrating Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and the fall season.  We are having so much fun and time is going so fast.

Second Grade

Second Grade just finished up their unit on Community Workers and did a fantastic job!  Everyone participated in dressing up as their worker and the presentations went well.  The month of November is going to be a busy one for Second Grade.  First we will be starting our unit about our State and doing many activities as we go through our unit.  We will also be learning about the Pilgrims and Indians as we get closer to Thanksgiving.  For Thanksgiving we will be having our annual feast with the Pilgrims and Indians and tasting many of the foods that they ate back when they had the very first Thanksgiving Feast.  Second Grade will also be visiting the Nursing Home this month.  We will be reading some plays to the residents of the Nursing Home.  For reading this month we will be reading about the hilarious character Amelia Bedelia and doing activities that she might do.  Second Grade wishes that everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!

Third Grade

First of all, the teachers would like to thank the parents for attending parent-teacher conferences.  It was very nice to finally meet with each of you.  Third graders had a “Spooktacular” October.  They did many things with spiders, including catching real webs. They also learned how to write a Haiku and Acrostic poems.  They ended the month by taking a trip to the zoo, to culminate our science unit on life sciences.  The month of November promises to be just as exciting and interesting.  They will continue their life science unit, and read more books on the colonists of the American Revolution Era, and many on pilgrims.  Math has them very busy learning how to add and subtract 3- and 4-digit numbers.  Students will be doing several Thanksgiving related activities that will hopefully be just as much fun as the Halloween ones.  We wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving, and if you travel to visit family, BE SAFE!

Fourth Grade

Second quarter is off to a great start in fourth grade. We are finishing up a small lesson on Poetry. In English we will be covering Nouns. We have just finished reading a wonderful book called Sarah Plain and Tall. We will continue doing activities to go along with this book.  In Math our division will be getting more difficult, we will add another step in our problems. In Science we are finishing up the chapter over Life Science.   In Social Studies we have begun studying Missouri History.  We will learn about the land of MO and its regions. Quickly approaching is our Ice Cream Party, as more and more fourth graders pass their 0-12 multiplication mad minutes.

Art

The boys and girls will gobble up all of the fun activities we will be doing this month.  We will focus on the elements of art as we talk about the first Thanksgiving.  There will be many opportunities for students to show off their creative sides as we make collages, placemats, windsocks, and much more. In addition, kindergarten through second grade will work on special hats/headbands for the Christmas program.

Computer Lab

Thanks to everyone that participated in our first ever Trunk or Treat. It was a huge success. Over twenty vehicles participated and nearly 200 children attended.  A special thanks goes out to our parent committee; Jodi Johnson, Julia Young, and Helen McDonald. Participants are already gearing up for next year. In the computer lab we spent October becoming familiar with Microsoft Word 2003. We studied various toolbars and are familiar with inserting graphics and formatting them, using a variety of tools to enhance flyers, and creating tables.  All students, Second grade through Sixth grade, continue keyboarding.  Please feel free to check out our new keyboarding links in my IKeepbookmarks account: http://ww2.ikeepbookmarks.com/mary_ann_meives. Once again, the fundraiser scheduled for November 11th has been postponed until spring.

Library

The library’s first Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) distribution will be November 16th-November 22nd. The theme will be in keeping with the season: Thanks for Books! RIF days are the student’s favorite library days; they love choosing a book they never have to return. Students in 1st-3rd grades have begun reading the Show Me Reader Award Nominees, and they will have an opportunity to join other Missouri students in picking the winner in March. Exercise the mind-read daily.
